Description

Scarce 1802 S-233 Cent

1802 1C AU53 NGC. VF30 EAC. S-233, Die State II, High R.2. This is in the early range of DS II, with the wedge-shaped break below 18 but without visible clash marks on the reverse. The S-233 variety is "only" Rarity-2, but it acts more like an R.4 or R.5 variety when you want one. This example is tied with several others for 12th finest known. The surfaces have dark steel and olive coloration with a small spot of verdigris at the end of Liberty's bust. Both the obverse and the reverse have minor circulation marks.
