Description

Late Die State 1802 S-230 Cent

1802 1C AU55 NGC. VF35 EAC. S-230, Die State IX, R.1. The Sheldon-230 is a common variety, but is scarce in the latest die states. The cent offered here may be one of the finest known of this late die state. This is an important opportunity for the advanced specialist. In 1925, Howard Newcomb was not aware of this late die state, which George Clapp later designated as "5c-Df" in the Newcomb notation. In earlier reference works, standard notation was to assign numbers to the obverse dies and letters to the reverse dies. Varieties would then be identified by a number-letter combination. Newcomb took this a step further, and added lower case letters to represent different die states, providing a list of known combinations. In the case of this variety, Newcomb listed five different die states ranging from 5-Db to 5c-De. Grayish and olive-brown surfaces play host to splashes of reddish-brown patina, especially on the obverse. This cent appears to be recolored, although expertly so.
