Description

Lovely 1802 S-225 Cent

1802 1C AU58 NGC. XF45 EAC. S-225, Die State V, R.2. This cent is illustrated as Die State IV in the Breen Large Cent Encyclopedia. It is actually a very early Die State V with the rim crumbling visible along the right obverse border, but with the clash marks at the end of Liberty's bust still fully visible. This lovely cent has pleasing light to medium brown color with some splashes of darker steel toning. Lighter gold is also visible, faded from original mint red color. The surfaces are choice, save for a tiny flaw at the left obverse border along with a few other surface marks. Breen noted that this variety is often found on rough and mottled planchets, possibly affected by salt spray or bilgewater enroute from England. Salt spray or bilgewater was a common Breenism to explain such rough planchets, although we are not aware of any proof that this is what happened. What we do know is the excellent quality of this particular specimen.
