Sixth Finest 1802 S-242 Cent, AU58
1802 1C AU58 PCGS. S-242, B-19, R.2. Breen Die State III. A late die state with blurred clash marks on the obverse. Although S-242 is quite common, there are no Mint State pieces listed in Del Bland's Census. A more recent Bill Noyes Census lists a single Mint State example, with only nine coins that grade XF or better. Del Bland lists this piece as tied for sixth finest known, and Bill Noyes similarly places it in a sixth-place tie in his listing.This boldly defined piece, housed in an old green label PCGS holder, has dark chocolate surfaces with some lighter tan on the reverse. Only a few trivial surface marks and minor verdigris detract from its overall appeal. Bland XF45. Noyes XF40. MRB XF40.
