Description

The Naftzger 1802 S-232 Cent, MS64 Brown
Tied for Second Finest Known

1802 1C MS64 Brown PCGS. S-232, B-12, R.1. The reverse has a heavy rim break over ATE. Del Bland grades this piece MS60 and calls it second finest, tied with three other pieces in his Census. The reverse of this piece is plated in Bill Noyes' 1991 photo book, where he graded the coin MS60 and called it second finest, much as Del Bland did. However, by 2005, after the Naftzger coins had been sold to other collectors, Noyes inexplicably dropped his grade to AU50, and placed its Census rank in a tie for eighth finest. Today, we fully agree with the earlier assessment by Noyes, and the opinion of Bland, and grade this piece EAC 60.
