Description

1802 NC-2 Cent, VG10

1802 1C NC-2 R6 VG10 PCGS. Partly glossy chocolate brown and steel with darker steel and olive brown toning in the fields and protected areas. The surfaces are reasonably smooth but there is extremely fine roughness covering all but the highpoints of the devices. There is a small patch of stronger roughness in the field off the chin, and that patch is a lighter shade of brown. No verdigris but there are a few nicks in the field before the chin and neck plus a rim nick at TY. The date is not strong but it is easily readable and the legends are clear except for some strike weakness at the top of the reverse. The die crack through ERTY is light but clear, and that takes the difficulty out of attributing this very rare variety. Graded VG7 net G6 and tied for CC#7 in the Noyes census, his photo 26823. The top examples in his census grade 35(ANS)-20-10-8(2)-7-6(5)-5. Bland says VG7 and tied for CC#7; his top examples grade 40(ANS)-35-10(2)-8(2)-7(5). This cataloger's EAC grade for this example is VG8 sharpness net VG7. The attribution and COL Ellsworth Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS Gold Shield label (36338.10/32788777). (The reverse of the holder is scuffed.) PCGS population attributed as 1802 NC-2: 1 in VG10; 0 finer (10/24).

Julius "Jules" Reiver was born in Wilmington, Delaware, on September 25, 1916, and died there on February 11, 2004. Reiver was a collector and researcher who formed an extensive die variety collection of copper and silver coins, nearly completing collections in all denominations. He was a veteran of World War II, an engineer, and worked many years in the family carpet business. He retired from the Army Reserve in 1966 as a Lieutenant Colonel. Reiver participated in the 1985 Coinage of the Americas Conference and published several variety reference guides, including the original late date cent reference that has revolutionized attribution of that series. He originated the date reference number system for attributing the late date varieties. Reiver discovered the 1797 NC-7 large cent variety. Heritage sold the Reiver Collection in January 2006.
