The Naftzger 1802 S-232 Cent, MS64 Brown
Tied for Second Finest Known

1802 1C S-232, B-12, R.1, MS64 Brown PCGS. Our EAC Grade MS60. Mottled golden-tan and steel-brown surfaces exhibit a few trivial corrosion spots on each side of this lovely cent. The strike is nicely centered, showing complete obverse and reverse border dentils. Traces of faded mint red appear on the obverse of this lovely piece.

Variety: The reverse displays a heavy rim break and die cud over ATE and is plated in the 1991 Noyes photo book of the early cents. This late-state piece is Breen's Die State VI.

Population Data (3/15): This is the sole Mint State example that PCGS has certified as S-232.

Heritage Commentary: Del Bland grades this piece MS60 and calls it second finest, tied with three other pieces in his Condition Census. Bill Noyes graded this piece MS60 and tied for second finest known in his 1991 photo book, reducing his grade 10 points to AU50 and tied for eighth finest in 2005.
