Description
The Dupont-Norweb 1802 NC-1 Cent
1802 1C VF30 NGC. Fine 12 EAC. NC-1, Die State IV, High R.5. This is one of two NCs among 1802 large cents, as listed by Dr. Sheldon. In 1949, he listed this variety as Rarity-8, and stated that he was aware of five examples, but two of those were in the ANS. Thus, his R.8 listing was based on the number known to be available to collectors. Just five years later, when he cataloged the Dupont large cents, Sheldon noted that there were "about 14 known." The Dupont Collection actually contained two examples. This cent has attractively blended light brown and olive color with additional golden-brown. The surfaces are choice for the grade. Del Bland graded this cent Fine 12 and considered it tied for sixth finest known, an important Condition Census offering. On his envelope, Wes Rasmussen wrote: "Super condition & color for a NC." We certainly agree with his observations. When Mrs. Norweb purchased this coin from the Dupont Collection, the estimate of value was "20 x $3.00 x 1 1/2" or $90.00. Mrs. Norweb had to pay $275 to acquire the coin in that sale!Ex: Charles J. Dupont (Stack's, 9/54), lot 352; Norweb Family (Bowers and Merena, 11/88), lot 2801; Larry Briggs (7/91).(#1470) (Registry values: N491)
