Description
1802 NORMAL DIES CENT, MS63 BROWN
S-239 NOYES PLATE COIN
1802 S-239 R3 MS63 Brown PCGS. Lustrous tan and light brown
with darker steel brown toning on the highpoints. A puff of
slightly darker reddish brown toning on the hair ribbon contains
traces of microscopic roughness and another is located at the top
of the L in LIBERTY. Otherwise this cent is choice and the eye
appeal is excellent. E-MDS, Breen state II, before the obverse die
cracked. The berry right of T in ENT is gone and there are die
clashmarks on both sides, strongest on the reverse. A very shallow
low spot over NE in ONE was caused by debris on the die. Graded net
AU55 and tied for CC#3 in the Noyes census, his photo #20571.
Called AU55 by Bland and tied for finest known in his census. This
cataloger's EAC grade is AU55. This is the plate coin for the early
die state in the 1991 Noyes reference. The attribution and Doug
Bird Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS Gold Shield label.
PCGS population 1; none finer. 36326.63/37573060.Ex Richard Picker-Dorothy I. Paschal-Donald Groves Partrick, Stack's 5/1975:563-Gordon J. Wrubel 1/1976-R. E. Naftzger, Jr., 1990 EAC Sale, lot 63 (as MS60 Choice)-Douglas F. Bird Collection, Goldbergs 2/16/2020:98-Walter J. Husak Collection.
