Stunning Gem 1803 Sheldon-258 Cent With an Impressive Pedigree

1803 1C Small Date, Large Fraction MS66 Brown NGC. S-258, R.1. Die State B. The rarity factor of this variety could lead one to conclude that the present coin is common. It most certainly is not, and it is most certainly the finest extant example of the S-258 die marriage. This is the plate coin in Noyes' 1991 book United States Large Cents: 1793-1814, and it listed as the premier example in his Condition Census. According to Del Bland, this coin is probably also the finest example listed in Robinson's February 28, 2001 Condition Census (the 17th edition of Copper Quotes by Robinson).
This coin is a late die state with the arc-like crack (as struck) easily discernible over the lower left obverse. The reverse crack (also as produced) at the D in UNITED is also seen, and it identifies Reverse N, which was used to strike S-258 as well as S-259. Both sides are glossy in texture with dominant orange-brown color. Shades of blue-gray patina hug many of the reverse devices, all of which are suitably well defined despite some not overly distracting striking softness toward the left periphery. The obverse is much more sharply impressed, particularly over Liberty's portrait. Both sides are free of mentionable distractions, and the most important pedigree markers are a pair of obverse spots: the first is in the field at the top of the 18 in the date, and the second is in the field at Liberty's chin.
Ex: B. Max Mehl; T. James Clarke (10/54); R. E. Naftzger, Jr. (2/23/92); Eric Streiner; September 1997 Superior Auction (Superior, 9/97), lot 66.
