Important 1804 Cent, A Pleasing VF Specimen
1804 VF 20 ANACS. S-266, the only known dies, R.2. Die State C. This die state shows prominent die breaks over the RTY of LIBERTY and MERIC of AMERICA. This date is one of the keys to the entire large cent series. Its low mintage combined with only one pair of dies used make this a very popular date with collectors. It has been so for more than a century, with restrikes produced sometime around 1860 which were made from an altered 1803 obverse die that was married with an 1818 reverse. Darker brown color over both sides and well balanced overall, there are a few small marks on the obverse but none of singular importance. The obverse rim is weakly impressed from 3 to 5 o'clock from die opposition to the cud on the reverse rim. And again, weak on the denticles on the reverse from 5 to 7 o'clock from opposition to the cud over RTY. A pleasing example of this rare and important issue.Coin Index Numbers: (PCGS# 1504, GSID# 825)
