Description

High Grade, Condition Census 1804 Cent

1804 AU 58. S-266, R.2. Die State C. Very rare and popular as well, the key date 1804 is a limited production issue with only 96,500 pieces struck, all from one pair of dies. Because so many coins were produced from only pair of dies, the dies cracked and three distinct states are recognized for this date.
This is a very pleasing coin that retains almost complete mint luster. Most of each side has a light reddish-brown, almost rust colored, patina with occasional flecks of dark brown here and there. There is a faint trace of an old fingerprint in the lower right obverse field, and the only other mentionable surface flaw is a large, but shallow, upside-down V-shaped scratch in the field just behind the head of Liberty. Little else could be considered a flaw, making us believe this piece is a very likely candidate for the revised Condition Census as listed in the Noyes' reference. An important coin and sure to be of interest to serious copper collectors.
