Lightly Circulated 1804 Large Cent Rarity
1804 1C AU 58. S-266, the only known dies, R.2. Die State C. In a year of several noteworthy rarities, the silver dollar has consistently surpassed its 1804-dated brethren in terms of popularity and charm. As all fifteen known specimens of this notorious imposter, however, were coined in either 1834-1835 or 1859, we feel that top honors would be better bestowed upon a coin that was actually produced during the 1804 calendar year. A suitable, and equally elusive, candidate would be the large cent. Although the Philadelphia Mint reported that it delivered 756,838 large cents in 1804, the majority of these pieces were undoubtedly dated 1803. Numismatists estimate that fewer than 100,000 1804-dated cents were actually produced, giving this issue the lowest mintage of any business strike cent of the 19th century. Whereas most surviving examples are heavily worn or impaired, this is a refreshing, original near-Mint piece. The surfaces carry an even layer of orange-brown patina that deepens slightly to chocolate-brown before Liberty's bust. The rims are complete and, with the exception of a small area on the right obverse and the diagnostic die cracks, display nearly full denticles. The balance of the coin is superb and the lightly worn devices display ample evidence of their razor sharp impression. Although we note a few scattered scratches (most notably below the L of LIBERTY), these are inconspicuous and do not inhibit the overall attractiveness of this coin. Only the strongest bid would be able to secure this prized rarity for one's copper collection.Coin Index Numbers: (PCGS# 1504, GSID# 825)
