Description

1804 S-266, B-1 Cent, XF45
Early Die State

1804 1C S-266, B-1, R.2, XF45 PCGS. Breen Die State I. We see no evidence of die cracks on either side of this important cent. The next die state has obverse and reverse cracks, but no rim breaks. State III has the obverse rim break, and State IV has obverse and reverse rim breaks. Bill Noyes records just five examples of 29 in the earliest die state, and none finer than VF30 based on his grading.

Although a glass reveals the usual scattered marks on the chocolate and golden-brown surfaces, they fail to prevent a PCGS grade for this piece. Most of those marks are in the reverse periphery, with a small scratch in the left obverse field. This lovely cent survives from a mintage estimated at under 100,000 coins, despite recorded delivery figures that totaled 756,838 coins. Our EAC grade VF35.
