Description

Late Die State 1804 S-266 Cent

1804 1C XF Details NCS. VF20 EAC. S-266c, Die State IV, R.2. This is the final die state with rim breaks over RTY on the obverse and over MERIC on the reverse. Not only is 1804 a key date issue, it is also one of the only issues where die state collecting extends beyond a small group of advanced specialists. Walter Breen attributed this to David Proskey, who described the different die states of 1804 cents as "sub-varieties." Sub-varieties and die states are unrelated and should not be confused. Walter Breen stated that this late die state is slightly more common than the others, but only because so many extensively worn examples have been identified only by the rim breaks on each side. The obverse has intermingled light brown and steel color with almost complete steel-brown on the reverse. Only the devices on the reverse are lighter in color. Although minor corrosion is visible, the surfaces are actually quite pleasing for this issue. NCS Corroded.
