Description

Condition Rarity 1805 Half Cent, MS 62 Red and Brown

1805 1C MS 62 Red and Brown. S-269, R.1. When last offered as lot 5759 in our Cleveland ANA National Money Sale (3/97), this coin was housed in an MS 62 Red and Brown PCGS holder. It is the only coin so graded by PCGS (4/01). Suitably defined in the centers, both sides also possess partial denticulation. The surfaces display a frosty texture with orange-brown coloration. The 1805 was produced to the extent of 814,464 pieces, a not insignificant total for a U.S. half cent. Nevertheless, survivors that grade as fine as the present example are rare. A few carbon spots over and behind Liberty's portrait on the obverse account for the grade.
Ex: Cleveland ANA National Money Sale (Heritage, 3/97), lot 5759, where it realized $4,265. Uncertified.
