Description
Pleasing 1806 S-270 Cent
1806 1C AU55 NGC. XF40 EAC. S-270, R.1. Despite what is sometimes suggested, the 1806 S-270 large cent is actually a common variety. What must be remembered is that this is the only variety of the date, thus it must serve the demand of several different types of collector. Of course, the variety collector will want a nice example to represent the die marriage, and the advanced specialist will look for as many as four different die states. In addition, date collectors and Red Book collectors will each be seeking a nice representative for their collections. All of this demand has given the appearance of rarity for this date. This demand has also removed many top quality examples from the marketplace. Attractive coins are generally only available when collections are dispersed. The obverse of this cent is mahogany with olive toning highlights and a couple splashes of darker steel-brown. The reverse is similar but deeper in color. Both sides present choice quality.Ex: Robison Sale (Stack's, 2/82), lot 441.(#1513) (Registry values: N2998)
