Description
Outstanding 1807/6 Large 7 Sheldon-273
1807/6 Large 7, S-273, R.1. Sharpness of AU 55, net AU 50. Lightly cleaned long ago, and nicely retoned with tawny-brown patina and hints of olive and blushes of mulberry hues. The fields retain all of the mint luster, and are undisturbed by the past 190 years. Identifiable by a nearly horizontal, almost imperceptible mark in the left field and a similarly small mark on Liberty's cheek. Boldly struck throughout, the only weakness is on the lower right leaves of the right branch. Although a common variety, this particular coin is noted in William C. Noyes United States Large Cents 1793 - 1814 Condition Census as Mint State 60 as the French-Sloss-R.E. Naftzger coin, and may qualify at that level. Whatever the grade, this coin will be highly valued by any collector or dealer who has the pleasure to own it. Late die state, with the rim break over STA of STATES.Ex: Dr. James O. Sloss, 9/58; R. E. Naftzger, Jr.; Early American Coppers (4/89), lot 160.
