Description

1807/6 Small 7, Blunt 1 VF 30. S-272, R.5+. Rough, Porous Planchet. An exceptionally rare late date Draped Bust cent. Only 15-20 of these pieces are known with no more than a half dozen above Fine. This piece should fall somewhere in the mid to lower range of the condition census for the variety, but its value will most likely be somewhat less because of the surface roughness. Most of the known specimens are low grade and porous. In the past this coin has been sold as corroded, but we believe its surface texture has more to do with porosity than corrosion. The piece is a glossy, even brown over both sides and there are no distinctive marks. R This is an impressively pedigreed coin. Ex: Newcomb Collection (James MacAllister and Wayte Raymond, 2/7/45), lot 464; Sheldon Collection (Boston, 1948); Bitler Collection; and Loring Collection (8/12/78), three non-auction flips accompany.
