Splendid 1808 S-277 12-Star Cent
1808 1C AU55 NGC. XF40 EAC. S-277, Die State VII, R.2. This issue marks the beginning of the new Classic Head design prepared by John Reich. Earlier generations of numismatists were apt to call this the Turban Head variety, even though there is no turban in sight. This variety is designated the first of the Classic Heads, perhaps out of tradition for an exact emission sequence is impossible. A total of 19 die varieties are known from 1808 through 1814. Within each year, each die marriage is monogamous, and in only one case is a die used in two different years (1811 S-286 and 1812 S-291 share the same reverse). This example is a variation of the variety sometimes called the 12-star cent, for the lowest left star is extremely weak and nearly invisible. This cannot correctly be called a die state, as every die state can have both 12 and 13-star variations. The surfaces have attractive olive-brown color with some small splashes of darker steel toning.
