Description

Pleasing 1809 S-280 Cent

1809 1C AU53 NGC. VF30 EAC. S-280, Die State VI, R.2. This is one of three early date large cents that are single variety dates; the others are 1804 and 1806. In each case, the varieties are not rare, but the additional demand placed on the existing supply creates the appearance of rarity. The digit 9 was punched over a smaller 9 that Breen attributed as from the half eagle font. In earlier years, this variety was considered by some to be an 1809 over 8 overdate. The doubling shows below center of the 9, but is somewhat indistinct in this later die state. This is an attractive olive-brown example with some darker brown color. A small patch of corrosion covers the upright of D.
