Description

1809 S-280 Cent, MS64 Brown CAC
Tied for the Finest Known
Plated in the 1914 ANS Exhibition Catalogue

1809 1C S-280, B-1, R.2, MS64 Brown PCGS. CAC. Breen Die State VII showing approximately parallel die cracks slanting down from the E in STATES to the upper leaves. Both dies are clashed, and the date is blurred due to worn dies the transferred peripheral weakness to the last coins struck from that die pair that is the only marriage of the coinage date, remaining in use for many strikes. Two deliveries of cents included 47,367 coins on June 3 and 175,500 coins on December 31, with Breen suggesting that cents of the June 3 delivery were probably all dated 1808. This exceptional Choice Mint State example exhibits frosty chocolate-brown luster with blue-steel overtones and splashes of mint red on the obverse, and chestnut-brown blended with tan on the reverse. Careful examination is required to find any provenance identifiers on this amazing survivor.
