Description

1810 S-285, B-2 Cent, MS64 Brown
Tied for Fifth Finest in Noyes

1810 1C S-285, B-2, R.2, MS64 Brown PCGS. Breen Die State III. The obverse is cracked through the bottom of 10 and continues to connect every star at the right. Blurry clash marks are visible inside the right side of the wreath. The stars and letters are lightly pulled to the border. Glossy olive and chocolate-brown surfaces exhibit trivial splashes of darker toning. Otherwise, the surfaces are nearly free of marks. The strike is excellent and nicely though imperfectly centered. Full Mint State sharpness with a short hairline scratch in the left obverse field.

The S-285 cent is elusive in higher grades, despite its low rarity rating. This variety proved to be difficult when photos were selected to illustrate the Breen Large Cent Encyclopedia. Breen noted in that reference that survivors are normally dark and that Mint State specimens are from a tiny hoard discovered early in the 20th century.
