Description

1812 Cent, MS64 Red and Brown
S-288, Superb Eliasberg Example

1812 1C Large Date, S-288, B-3, R.2, MS64 Red and Brown PCGS. Eliasberg. Breen Die State I, dentils are strong in this early die state. Despite a mintage of 1,075,500 cents in 1812, Mint State Red and Brown examples are extremely rare, largely because of the lower grade of copper containing metallic impurities used during the Classic Head cent series. Only four die pairings were needed to complete the 1812 cent mintage. This is the Large Date S-288 variety with the script 8 in the date.

This is a superb example of an 1812 cent, formerly in the prestigious collection of distinguished numismatist Louis E. Eliasberg. Struck sharply although slightly off-center, all design elements are well formed, with just slight weakness in some upper hair curls. Original red mint luster is retained in protected areas, especially on the reverse. In the open fields and on the portrait, the color transitions to a medium brown, with small carbon spots adjacent to stars 1 and 2. Overall, this Classic Head cent has excellent eye appeal. Housed in a Generation 3.1 green label PCGS holder.
