LATE STATE 1812 S-291 CENT, VF35
1812 S-291 R2 VF35 PCGS. Glossy brown and chocolate with traces of frosty light brown in a few of the protected areas on both sides. No roughness, just minor contact marks. The notable marks are a diagonal nick right of star 5, a lighter one off the upper lip, and a thin nick hidden on the rim left of star 5. LDS, Breen state IV. The always-present die crack on the obverse reaches faintly through the base of the date, and the cracks above the head are clear. Graded VF30 net VF25 and tied for CC#23 in the Noyes census, his photo #60006. This cataloger's EAC grade is VF25. A nice mid-grade Classic Head Cent. Perhaps one of the best known employees of the first Mint was Adam Eckfeldt. He was born on June 15, 1769, and died on February 6, 1852. Although he had done work for the Mint since 1792, Eckfeldt received his commission as Assistant Coiner on January 1, 1796 at an annual salary of $800. Following the death of Henry Voigt, Eckfeldt was promoted to the position of Chief Coiner on February 15, 1814, with a salary increase to $1,500 per year. He remained in that position for the next 25 years until his retirement in 1839. The full record of his service to the Philadelphia Mint spans 47 years from his first earnings in 1792. The Eckfeldt family was associated with the Philadelphia Mint for well over a century until 1930 when Eckfeldt's grandson, Jacob B. Eckfeldt, resigned as the Mint's assayer.
