Description
Incredibly Well Preserved 1814 Large Cent
1814 1C Crosslet 4 MS 62 Brown PCGS. S-294, R.1. Throughout its seven-year production run, the Classic large cent was plagued by poor planchet quality which explains the dearth of pristine examples on today's market. The Mint's deliveries of copper blanks from Boulton & Watt in Birmingham, England for the 1808, 1809, and 1811 issues were inferior in quality to the shipments of earlier years. For the later issues, the War of 1812 cut the Mint off from Boulton & Watt and forced federal authorities to seek alternate sources of copper blanks, the stock again being of inferior quality. It is little wonder, therefore, that many representatives of this type are porous and/or corroded. On the other hand, this final-year example displays smooth, chocolate-brown surfaces that seem conservatively graded at the MS 62 level. The devices are sharply struck, and the denticles are equally well formed. An important coin that should fit comfortably into any advanced copper collection. From the Bob Bisanz U.S. Type Set.
