Description
1814 S-295 Cent, MS67 Brown
Sole Finest Plain 4 at PCGS
1814 1C Plain 4, S-295, B-2, R.1, MS67 Brown PCGS. CAC. Our EAC
Grade MS63. This amazing Superb Gem is housed in a green-label
PCGS holder. Both sides display glossy light brown surfaces with
olive-brown on the obverse. Traces of original orange mint luster
appear in the protected areas, complementing the bold strike.Variety: The only variety featuring the Plain 4 date style. This late die state example, Breen Die State XIII, shows a clearly visible rim break over the D in UNITED. The obverse exhibits crumbling at the chin, from the lower lip to the throat, and along the neck. One of the latest die states we have seen.
Population Data (3/15): This MS67 Brown example is the sole finest at PCGS. The coin number on the PCGS label is for the Crosslet 4 variety, where this piece appears in the PCGS Population Report, although the actual coin is clearly a Plain 4.
Heritage Commentary: Although 1814 large cents are plentiful in lower grades, Mint State pieces are scarce, especially in higher grades. This last-year-of-type Classic Head cent in Superb Gem condition should see considerable bidder demand.
Provenance: RARCOA (7/18/1997).
