Description
1814 MS 63 Red and Brown NGC. Crosslet 4. S-294, R.1. Of the greatest importance to collectors, and likewise of the greatest rarity for two reasons. First, Classic large cents are very elusive in XF condition, and extremely rare in mint state. Only a handful have survived in uncirculated grades and no hoards are known to us. Second, Classic cents almost never have any trace of mint red. Why this is so is not known for certain. One theory posits that the planchets were shipped from Boulton and Watt and while stored in the hold of the ship, bilge water infiltrated the hold and darkened the blanks. Whatever the reason, this is a very rare and important copper coin. The devices are nearly complete in their definition. Small portions of mint red can still be made out within the word LIBERTY on the headband and surrounding the devices. Otherwise, dark brown with a couple of darker areas on the obverse. So recently certified, the coin does not appear on the population data from NGC, two are finer, both MS 66, both probably resubmissions of the same coin.
