Description
1814 CROSSLET 4 CENT, AU55
CHOICE S-294
1814 S-294 R1 Crosslet 4 AU55 PCGS, CAC Approved. Choice
frosty medium steel brown and olive with subtle overtones of light
bluish steel. Satiny mint luster covers the fields and protected
areas and this cent has outstanding eye appeal. Sharply struck and
it looks choice mint state, but there is a trace of friction on the
very highest points of the devices. The only marks are a couple
microscopic ticks right of star 6 and a few more right of the top
of the E in ONE. MDS, Breen state II early, with light die
clashmarks at the throat and sharp dentils around both sides. There
is a clear double profile on the chin from die bounce or shift
(machine doubling). Graded EF45 and tied for CC#39 in the Noyes
census, his photo #61057. This cataloger's EAC grade is AU50. A
very nice example of the Classic Head type. The attribution and
Nancy and Bryan Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS Gold
Shield label. PCGS population 4; 12 finer ranging from 58 to 66.
36520.55/21484160.Ex Thomas D. Reynolds 8/18/2003-Nancy & Bryan (Yamasaki) Collection, Goldbergs 2/16/2020:337-Walter J. Husak Collection.
Although his talents came to the attention of Mint Director Elias Boudinot in June 1801, Johann Matthaus "John" Reich waited nearly six years to receive his commission as the Mint's assistant engraver on April 1, 1807, and he remained at that position for 10 years until his departure on March 31, 1817. During his time at the Mint, Reich earned a salary of $600 per year. Reich, who was the son of Johann Christian Reich, was born in Bavaria about 1768 and died in Albany, New York in 1833. He learned the engraving trade from his father. The designs of copper, silver, and gold coins issued during his Mint employment are attributed to Reich.
