Description
Attractive 1816 N-8 Cent
1816 1C AU Details NCS. AU50 EAC. N-8 (1/2), Early Die State, R.3. Howard Newcomb used a notation of (1/2) and (3/4) to denote double and triple profiles, the result of machine doubling as we know it today, but highly collectible on early coinage. Die defects extend four dentils below 18 into the field, providing instant identification of this obverse die. The N-8 variety is relatively common, however, it is seldom seen in higher grades. In fact, only three or four Mint State examples are known, along with eight or nine AU coins. The present example is tied for sixth finest known. Very pleasing surfaces with light tan and iridescent color, although probably recolored at some time in the past. This example has very slight doubling of the profile at Liberty's bust. Evidence of lacquer is noted around most of the devices. NCS Improperly Cleaned.Ex: Toivo Johnson (East Holden, Maine dealer, 1958); Admiral W.S. Bitler (4/61); R.E. Naftzger, Jr.; 1983 EAC Sale, lot 306.(#1591) (Registry values: N491)
