Description

1816 1C MS62 Brown NGC. N-7, R.3. Our EAC Grade AU58. Ex: Mervis Collection. A late die state, the projection on the upper loop of the 6 obscured by lapping and die wear. Both sides of this lovely cent have satin surfaces with cartwheel luster. The medium chocolate obverse retains lighter tan, faded from mint red, in the protected areas, while the blue-steel and olive reverse has a glossy appearance. A lovely cent, and an important opportunity for the specialist. A trace of rub prevents a full MS60 grade, although Bob Grellman graded this piece MS60 Plus in the Holmes catalog. Although expert opinions differ, this piece is likely among the 10 finest known of the variety.
Ex: Superior (1/1989), lot 3115; J.R. Frankenfield (Superior, 2/2001), lot 630; Daniel W. Holmes (Goldberg Coins, 5/2010), lot 16.
