Description

1816 N-2 Cent, MS64 Red
Full Mint Red Rarity

1816 1C N-2, R.1, MS64 Red PCGS. Noyes Die State C/B with prominent rim breaks at the upper right obverse. Although 1816 Newcomb-2 is a Randall Hoard variety that is frequently seen in Mint State grades, full mint red examples are rare. Despite a few trivial contact marks, this Choice Mint State 1816 N-2 cent is extraordinary. Both sides are entirely brilliant with the original orange mint luster intact, aside from slight mellowing at ICA of AMERICA. PCGS has certified only three such coins among all 1816 large cents, including N-2. This is the first large cent issue produced after the 1815 intermission when the mint ran out of copper planchets. It represents the start of the "Middle Date" series of cents that continued until 1839. PCGS 1816 Population: 2 in 64 Red, 0 finer. PCGS N-2 Population: 1 in 64 Red, 0 finer (10/24).
