1818 N-4 Cent, AU55
1818 1C AU55 NGC. N-4, R.4. Our EAC Grade XF45. Ex: Mervis
Collection. Extensive sinking and die cracks appear on the obverse
of this late die state specimen. A heavy crack bisects star 3, and
a prominent die chip is located between stars 6 and 7. The O in ONE
is nearly absent as a result of the obverse die sinking. Prominent
spalling appears in the sunken areas of the obverse, and the
combination of die defects explains the rarity of this die
Tied for Finest Known
Previously certified AU58 NGC when it was offered as part of our sale of the Jules Reiver Collection. This is certainly one of the stars of the Mervis middle date large cent collection. The variety is considered just Rarity-4 today, but it was not long ago that a Rarity-5 rating was assigned to the 1818 N-4. This example from the Adam Mervis Collection, and previously part of the Jules Reiver and Dan Holmes collections, is tied with the Naftzger specimen (Goldberg Coins, 2/2009, lot 60) for finest known honors. The condition census falls dramatically with four VF examples and four other Fine grade coins. The remaining population grades less than Fine 12.
This die marriage was first recorded by Frank Andrews in 1881, but it was not until the 1940s that a second had been found. In 1991, when John Wright had completed the manuscript for his middle date reference, he was aware of about 80 coins, and today there are possibly 100 in existence.
This is an outstanding example with deep olive and chocolate-brown color, blended with considerable lighter tan, probably faded from original red. It is highly unusual to find such an attractive specimen of this variety, as most are dark and on rough planchets. A prize cent.
Ex: Lennie Schramm (12/17/1993); Jules Reiver (Heritage, 1/2006), lot 19749; Dan Holmes (Goldberg Coins, 5/2010), lot 87.
