Condition Census 1818 N-4 Cent

1818 1C VF Details NCS. VF20 EAC. N-4, Late Die State, High R.4. This is the well-known key variety among all 1818 large cents and is one of the most important varieties within the middle date series from 1816 to 1839. While only rated Rarity-4 today, Howard Newcomb gave this an R-6 rarity rating, his highest degree of rarity. Even when this same coin was offered by Superior Galleries as part of the Jack Robinson Collection in 1989, the rarity was still given as R-5 based on the Sheldon scale. Regarding high quality examples, the finest known for this variety is just XF or AU, depending on whose opinion is presented, and the present example remains tied for the fifth finest known. In 1991, John Wright noted a total population of about 80 examples, with a few more known today.
This cent has glossy dark olive-brown surfaces with minute porosity, yet retains an exceptional appearance. This example is from a very late state of the dies with a prominent die crack from the border through star 3, almost to Liberty's mouth. The obverse exhibits considerable swelling with a few other raised die defects visible. The O in ONE is nearly invisible, a result of the obverse swelling and not an actual defect in the reverse die. NCS Environmental Damage.
