    Description

    1819 N-8 Large Cent, AU58
    Early Die State

1819 1C Small Date AU58 PCGS. N-8, R.1. MRB AU55. This early die state piece has full borders and a faint line between the bases of AT in STATES. There is no evidence of reverse die buckling. The light tan obverse is reflective with splashes of sky-blue patina. The reverse is satiny with the addition of delicate lime-green toning. A few scattered marks on each side include small nicks near the forehead and above the N in ONE. Simply described as "red and brown uncirculated" in the 1974 Bowers and Ruddy catalog. This common variety often comes with prooflike surfaces, the reason that several "proof" examples were offered in old catalogs. Nearly all of those coins have since been reclassified as business strikes.
Bowers and Ruddy Galleries was a partnership of Q. David Bowers and James Ruddy. Many years earlier, they were partners in Empire Coin Company of upstate New York. They both relocated to Southern California, forming Bowers and Ruddy Galleries in the Los Angeles area in 1972. Ruddy retired circa 1978 and Bowers continued with the firm until 1982, when he formed Bowers and Merena Galleries. Their sales in the mid-1970s were conducted under the American Auction Association banner.
