Description

1819 1C Small Date -- Burnished -- NGC Details. AU. N-7, R.4. Our EAC Grade VF30. Ex: Mervis Collection. Along with some rust pits discussed below, this reverse die is characterized by unusually large berries in the wreath. The Newcomb-7 variety of 1819 is the scarcest variety of the year with few high grade specimens known. Attractive olive and steel-brown with a few splashes of lighter chestnut color and a patch of maroon patina on the reverse. The surfaces have a few trivial abrasions and light scratches. The reverse has some raised rust pits transferred from the coinage die. The NGC description of "Burnished" seems a little harsh, in our opinion as this is an attractive cent.
Ex: Henry C. Hines; Howard R. Newcomb (J.C. Morgenthau, 5/1945), lot 527; Floyd Starr (Stack's, 6/1984), lot 118; Wes Rasmussen (1/2005), lot 3428; Dan Holmes (Goldberg Coins, 5/2010), lot 117.
