The Newcomb-Starr 1820/19 N-1 Cent
1820/19 1C MS65 Brown NGC. AU55 EAC. N-1, Early Die State, R.1. The date shows recutting on the 1 and 8 in addition to the previous 1 visible beneath the digit 2. A short graver scratch connects the bases of AM on the reverse. Each of these two characteristics is indicative of an early die state. This is a lovely cent with light olive-brown color and splashes of pale blue and steel toning. A short scratch from star 1 to the bust is the only significant imperfection, and this is nearly invisible. Three different 1820/19 overdate varieties are known, and each is from a different obverse die. This N-1 variety is the most common of these three varieties with more surviving than both N-2 and N-3 together.Ex: Howard Newcomb (J.C.
