Description
Lovely 1822 N-6 Cent
1822 1C MS61 Brown NGC. AU55 EAC. N-6, Early Die State, R.3. There is no evidence of die rust or other die defects associated with later die states. Although a plentiful variety with a number of higher grade coins known, this is probably one of the top couple dozen survivors. Pleasing medium brown surfaces have mottled golden-brown, pale greenish-blue, and steel color with lighter tan, faded from original mint red. Nicely detailed even though it is not fully struck; some weakness is apparent among the stars and lower leaf details. The fields have frosty mint luster. This early die state example was undoubtedly struck very soon after the few brilliant proofs from the same dies. Only two of those proofs survive today. In the Floyd Starr sale this cent was described as "MS63" and in the Herman Halpern catalog it was described as "Tied for finest known."Ex: Jascha Heifitz Sale (J.C.
