Description

1822 N-2 Cent, MS64 Brown
From the Naftzger Collection

1822 1C MS64 Brown PCGS. N-2, Low R.3. Ex: Naftzger Collection. An obverse die crack connects stars 7 to 9 and another joins stars 9 through 12. The reverse has a short crack from the ribbon to the border at 6 o'clock. This stunning Choice Mint State specimen has reflective fields with full satin luster and deep greenish steel-brown surfaces showing splashes of tan. Each star is been carefully strengthened as Bob Grellman pointed out in the Naftzger catalog. He writes: "Someone very carefully strengthened one radial line in most of the stars" and continued to state that the "improvement is easily missed ... the grades assigned by Noyes, Bland, and PCGS attest to this." Noyes and Bland call this piece MS60 and tied for fourth finest known. Grellman called it AU55 although it is extremely difficult to call this lovely piece less than MS60. Our EAC grade AU55.
Ex: B.G. Johnson Estate; Hans M.F. Schulman (4/1951), lot 1125; Dr. Kenneth J. Sartoris; Del Bland; C. Douglas Smith (4/1976); R.E. Naftzger, Jr. (Goldberg Coins, 2/2009), lot 121.(Registry values: N1793)
