Description

1823 Restrike Cent, MS63 Brown
Intermediate Die State

1823 1C MS63 Brown PCGS. Restrike. Our EAC Grade AU55. Ex: Dan Holmes. The 1823 Restrike combines the obverse die of 1823 N-2 with the reverse die of 1813 S-293. This is an intermediate die state with the large rim break over stars 4 through 6 as always, and with a bisecting die crack from 10 o'clock to 4 o'clock. The second obverse crack has yet to form, and there is no trace of the bisecting reverse crack of later die states.

The 1823 Restrikes were produced in copper and silver, and the earliest appearances were shortly after the Civil War. The dies still exist today, and are held by the American Numismatic Association museum. Much can be learned from the study of those dies.
Ex: Bowers and Merena (6/2000), lot 222; Dan Holmes (Goldberg Coins, 5/2010), lot 222.
From The Adam Mervis Large Cent Collection.
