Description

1823 N-2 Normal Date Cent, AU58
Key to the Post-Sheldon Series

1823 1C N-2, R.2, AU58 PCGS. The two varieties of 1823, the normal date offered here and the overdate, are key issues among the middle and late date cents. Mint documents combine the mintage of 1823 and 1824 cents, recorded the production of 1,262,000 cents for the two years combined. The actual production for each of those years remains unknown. These issues are particularly elusive in higher grades. For both issues, PCGS has graded just 10 examples in Mint State.
New Netherlands described this cent as "Strictly Unc., Mint State-60" in 1957. A trivial rim bruise is evident at star 10 with a few other inconsequential marks including voids at ON in ONE that New Netherlands cataloged as "chips out of [the] planchet (as it came over from Birmingham)." This sharply detailed example has lovely light to medium brown surfaces with faded mint red in the protected areas hugging the devices. PCGS Population: 5 in 58 (1 in 58+), 7 finer (4/26).
