Description

1823 Copper Restrike Cent, N-3, MS66 Brown
Privately Produced from Mint Dies

1823 1C Private Restrike, N-3, R.2, MS66 Brown PCGS. CAC. At one time the Philadelphia Mint discarded used dies as scrap steel, until they realized that the dies could be used to produce coinage outside the Mint. Joseph Mickley purchased some of the old dies, and they later appeared in the auction of his collection. It is believed that these pieces were first struck in the mid to late-1860s, although the dies still exist today, now in the ANA Money Museum in Colorado Springs.

This Premium Gem exhibits a late state of the dies with advanced die rust and prominent obverse and reverse die cracks. Both sides have full cartwheel luster and olive-brown surfaces that exhibit traces of original orange color. A lovely example for the advanced specialist or Guide Book collector. Our EAC grade MS60+. Population: 6 in 66 Brown, 0 finer. CAC: 2 in 66, 0 finer (9/16).
