Description

Extremely Rare 1823 Silver Restrike Cent

1823 1C Silver Restrike. PR64 NGC. The earliest known reference to the Restrike large cents of 1823 dates to November 1862, when W. Elliot Woodward cataloged a copper composition example with the words "recently struck from the original die." It is not known for certain how the dies left the Mint, although the usual story is that they were sold by the Mint as scrap metal, and later acquired by Joseph Mickley. Reportedly, the original copper pieces were struck in the early 1860s, while the silver examples were produced in the late 1870s. Certainly, this example illustrates one of the latest known die states. In fact, the original dies are still in existence, and comparison with this coin shows that this is one of the last pieces to be struck from these dies. It is not known how many 1823 Silver Restrike Cents exist, however, we suspect the population is quite low. In fact, there are probably less than 10 known. For more information about these and the other large cent restrikes, see Mark Borckardt's article "Restriking the Issues: The Large Cent Restrikes of 1804, 1810, and 1823," Coinage of the Americas Conference, New York: American Numismatic Society, 1998."
