Mint State 1824/2 Overdate Cent

1824/2 1C MS62 Brown NGC. MS60 EAC. N-1, R.2. The Newcomb-1 overdate of 1824 is not a rare variety, while its listing in the Redbook and other popular collecting guides has placed emphasis on this issue for date collectors. Demand is considerably higher than it would be just from variety specialists. Of course, this date is rare in any Mint State grade. This cent is tied for fourth finest of the variety behind the Helfenstein, Starr, and ANS coins. Fewer than 50 Mint State 1824 large cents exist, including all five varieties. NGC has only certified 10 coins as Mint State, again including all five varieties, and this is only the third overdate they have graded as Mint State. This is sharply struck with attractively intermingled steel and tan color with additional olive toning. A few splashes of maroon patina are visible on the reverse; however, there is no evidence of any corrosion or other challenges to the surface, save for the usual light abrasions that any 180 year old coin would have acquired. This is from a later die state with all obverse and reverse cracks fully developed.
