Condition Census 1825 N-9 Cent

1825 1C MS64 Brown NGC. MS63 EAC. N-9, R.2. This is one of the more plentiful 1825 large cent varieties, including in higher grades. Yet few survive as nice as this. In fact, this is the fourth finest known per Del Bland's Census notes. Shortly after the Randall Hoard was discovered in the mid-19th century, some accounts included the year 1825. Walter Breen included this variety in his accounting of the Randall Hoard coins. However, this coin does not have the appearance of other Randall Hoard cents, which are usually heavily marked or spotted. Although described by NGC as Brown, we consider this to be fully Red and Brown. The design features are quite sharply defined with only a few of the stars lacking details. The obverse has a lovely blend of orange luster, blue-green toning, and chocolate-brown coloration. The reverse is mostly brown with a crescent of bright orange mint luster through AMERICA. A few splashes of darker steel toning are noted on the reverse. Aside from a shallow scrape on Liberty's neck, and a small mark on the cheek, the surfaces are quite pleasing. NGC has certified 32 examples of this date in all Mint State grades, with only two of those receiving the Red and Brown designation. We believe this should have been a third.
