The Hines-Sheldon-Starr 1827 N-12 Cent
1827 1C AU Details NCS. VF30 EAC. N-12, Intermediate Die State, High R.5. This is a rare variety that was considered to be Extremely Rare by Newcomb. Today, it just misses the R.6 designation with about 35 to 40 examples known. George Clapp first published the existence of this variety in the 1924 reprint of Andrews, and even by Newcomb's time there were only three or four known, including the present example, the second to be recognized. This is an intermediate die state, and the prominent obverse crack between the 1 and 8 of the date to the back of Liberty's ear is unmistakable. This example of the Newcomb-12 die marriage is tied with one other for second finest known. The only clearly finer coin is an incredible Mint State specimen. The dark green and steel surfaces show evidence of very minor corrosion, but the surfaces remain hard and slightly glossy. NCS Corroded.Ex: Grant's Hobby Shop (6/29), lot 578; Henry C.
