Description

Tied for Third Best 1829 N-5 Cent

1829 1C Medium Letters AU58 NGC. XF45 EAC. N-5, Early Die State, R.3. The obverse has slight evidence of rim crumbling over star 11, but otherwise appears perfect. The left obverse border is quite narrow, thus the rim crumbling that appeared later may or may not be present. This example is sharply struck, especially for the variety, with nearly complete hair details and full leaf details. O of ONE and E of CENT are bold, not weak like the typical example of this variety. The John Wright plate coin, for example, illustrates the typical weak strike of N-5. Radial flowlines appear through UNITED and into STA, and these may be a result of the weakness along the left obverse border. Attractive medium to dark brown is intermingled into a sort of woodgrain pattern. A few small handling marks are visible, as is a planchet flaw at I of UNITED. As a Condition Census coin, tied for the third finest known of the variety, this is an opportunity that should not be missed.
