Description
Second Finest 1829 Newcomb-9 Cent
1829 1C Medium Letters MS61 Brown NGC. AU50 EAC. N-9, Die State II, R.4. This variety is struck from the same reverse die as Newcomb 3 and 5, with the CA of AMERICA widely recut. The first A of AMERICA is filled at top, while on N-3 and N-5 all three As show some crumbling inside the openings. Accordingly, this example was produced earlier than the others. Accompanied with this lot are a couple of past envelopes. Ted Naftzger wrote on his envelope: "IIa: 3 oc's, A of AM (only) is filled in" and on the back "Notice Walter Breen notations (light blue) on inner envelope." Walter Breen's comments on the inner envelope: "Finest known. Next best is EF only. Characteristic weak striking. Mint luster. He [Taxay] never saw N-9 unc. Neither did Clapp, Newcomb, Hines, WHS, WC Blaisdell, F. Starr, etc." Much of the intrigue of large cent collecting comes from the people involved. This is an early die state with an obverse die crack from the border through star 12 to the back of Liberty's head, and a continuation of this same crack from her brow to star 4 and the border. In the 1989 EAC Sale catalog, Bill Noyes described this coin as AU55 and tied with one other for second finest known. In his July 2003 edition of "Penny Prices," he recorded the two finest known examples as XF45. Accordingly, we have split the difference and assigned an EAC grade of AU50. Del Bland has assigned a grade of XF45 as well. Close examination suggests that this is actually a full Mint State coin as graded by NGC, but bluntly struck on the highpoints. The surfaces are lustrous medium brown with splashes of lighter tan. Some reddish-brown toning spots are also visible on both sides.
