Description
Outstanding 1830 N-6 "Small Letters" Cent
1830 1C Medium Letters AU58 NGC. XF40 EAC. N-6, Intermediate Die State, R.4. Although generally considered a Medium Letters variety, this has been known as the 1830 Small Letters cent for many decades. This example is a middle die state with both reverse die cracks but no evidence of the obverse crack. Tied for seventh finest known in Del Bland's Condition Census of the variety. When looking at this coin, consider John Wright's comments: "Generally found on dark flans, often rough, and usually bluntly struck." We mention this as the current coin has none of these features. Both the obverse and the reverse have splendid chestnut brown color with pale gray on the highpoints. The surfaces are choice without any serious imperfections or roughness, and the strike is full, including strong star details. This is an amazing coin that will capture the attention of every serious collector, and it should grab the novice's attention as well.Allenburger Collection (B. Max Mehl, 3/48), lot 869; Willard C. Blaisdell; Del Bland; Jack Collins; Bowers and Ruddy (1/83), lot 594; Bob Grellman; Early American Coppers Convention (privately, 3/84).(#1675)(Registry values: P1)
