Description

1831 N-3 Cent, MS66+ Red and Brown
Medium Letters Reverse
The Finest Certified 1831 Cent

1831 1C Medium Letters, N-3, R.1, MS66+ Red and Brown PCGS. Ex: Naftzger-D. Brent Pogue. Noyes Die State B/B. Both dies are perfect, meaning there are no clash marks or die cracks. Through use, light radial flowlines have appeared that are pulling stars and letters gently toward the border. This Premium Gem is an amazing cent that shows splendid chocolate-brown toning with violet and sea-green, all accompanying substantial fiery mint red luster.

Bill Noyes grades this piece MS65 and tied with one other for the finest surviving 1831 N-3 cents known today. However, this example may be slightly finer. Jerry Bobbe, who owned both of the top examples, described this piece as "the Most Perfect N-3 of the non-Proofs." PCGS has certified just over 180 cents of 1831 in all Mint State grades, but just one of those has earned the MS66+ grade, and none are finer.

The provenance of this piece prior to 1964 is in doubt. Bill Noyes links this piece to lot 1515 in New Netherlands 50th Sale of 1957, where it was described (but not plated) as "soft-rosy original red blending with light olive. Minimal bag marks, the only one noticeable even under a glass being at lower reverse edge." The Naftzger catalog, and PCGS Coin Facts today, associate this piece with Abe Kosoff's 1958 ANA sale. Lot 545 was not plated and was described as "Uncirculated, considerable red." Not doubted is the fact that this is the finest existing 1831 cent of any variety according to PCGS. Our EAC Grade MS65. PCGS Medium Letters Population: 1 in 66 Red and Brown (1 in 66+), 0 finer. PCGS N-3 Population: 1 in 66 Red and Brown (1 in 66+), 0 finer (11/21).
